One of the advantages of group working is saving time. When the teacher assigns homework, the members of the group will help each other to complete the assignment, for example, when the teacher assigns a journal, it may have many paragraphs which can be devided among the members of the group. Then, each members of the group can summarize their paragraph to other members of the group. The result would be that every member would have an understanding of each paragraph without having to read the entire text. The second advantage of group working is idea sharing between members. With many members of the group sharing ideas, the best answer will be easier to find. The third advantages of group working is unity. Working as a group produces a feeling of team unity which results in every member working together to achieve an objective.
On the other hand, there are some disadvantages of group working. One disadvantage is selfishness of a member of the group. Each member of the group has different work habit. Some members may not help in doing homework but rely on others to do all the work. It is not fair that they benefit with the same good grade as someone who works harder. The second disadvantage is the problem of working with many members that have different ideas. Other members may not agree with new ideas suggested by some members. Many times, it is difficult to make group working successful with too many different ideas. The third disadvantage is irresponsibility. Often, the leader becomes responsible for homework that one of the followers does not complete, for example, the leader assings a follower to do homework but that member fails to do the homework or come late. In either case, the work of the entire group is hurt.
As described above, group working has many advantages and disadvantages. The success depends on the work ethic of followers and themembers working together as a team to achieve goals and objectives. For some types of work, this approach is appropriate. For other types of work, group working may not be the correct method. You should choose the best method for doing assingments based on your experience.
